Healthy Kids Survery

Literature Analysis #2

1. The novel I read is The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky, This novel is about a boy named Charlie, he{s a freshman in high school. So as every freshman in high he tries making friends and meets a Senior named Patrick who soon enough becomes his best friend. Patrick introduces Charlie to his step sister Sam. The three of them hung out almost everyday which was new for Charlie because he was use to being home and writing. Yes ,Charlie likes to write quite a bit actually and also read. He writes about the things he deals with everyday both good and bad. So Charlie always loved his aunt Helen who died on his birthday. He always wondered why he loved her so much until one day he found out when he had a mental breakdown. As Charlie was about to have intercourse with Sam that is when he had his mental breakdown because he realized his aunt had sexually abused him multiple times. After his parents found out they hospitalized him until he was better.
2. There were many themes in this book but two of my favorites are just because bad things happen to good people that doesn't make them bad people and to love yourself and accept yourself because that's all you need. An example for the first theme is despite Charlie being abused he did not become a bad person. An example for the second theme came from quote from the book that says, "We accept the love we think we deserve" which makes Sam realize she's worth more than she thinks and starts accepting herself.
3. From the tone of the story I think the author would be the type of person would stay up all night and still wake up early. He would definitely be a coffee person. He's the type of person to have the basic regular breakfast at iHOP. He's one of the quite smart authors that notice everything. His interests are very peculiar. Kind of seem stuck up but really isn't he's just always serious.

Speech (Decisions and the Future)

Every decision we make in our life matters, a lot actually. That decision can possibly mean nothing to you when in reality you never know that choice could change your life completely, perhaps in that moment or in the future. It can either benefit you or hurt you mentally or physically. Sometimes we make decisions without even thinking if it will affect us in the future, which isn't a smart choice. I feel like whenever we get the opportunity to make a decision we have to the mentality of a mature person. When I make a decision I think about it, will it help me grow as a person or not. Honestly it's based on what we decide. I also really think that the present matters, like our actions in the present basically lead to what our future will look like. So with that being said we need to make decision that will help us get the future we want. One day you might think whatever you did doesn't matter but it will come back to you in the future. One great example is "The Sound of Thunder" he killed the butterfly and didn't think it would matter so when he got back he realized it did matter because a different president won the campaign. So not only did it affect him but everyone else too.

A Sound of Thunder

After reading and getting to the end of it I understood the connection between today's tune and the story. My honest thought on the story has to be I enjoyed it, it was a good one. It had a great point to it, time is nothing to be played around with because if you make a mistake you can change so much with a small "mistake".

Emerson Essay Prompt

About a week ago history was made once again, by that I mean we elected Donald Trump to run our country. Before getting any deeper into this I'm just going to say that about 117 million people who were eligible to vote, didn't. Already by knowing that Emerson would've been pretty angry at this country. Having the privilege to vote, didn't take advantage and then when they elect the president you didn't want you complain. Ridiculous, Emerson wouldn't just be angry he'd be disappointed. How are you going to be angry when you didn't even bother to make time to go do something so easy that may or may not benefit you and the others in this country. Everyone's vote counts and if you think otherwise that's a shame.
Emerson said, " Do not think the youth has no force, because he cannot speak to you and me". I completely agree with Emerson, by this he means the youth has a voice but just because they don't use it doesn't mean they don't have one. In this case he'd be astonished on how the youth did not use their voice. It's sad to know that America is also known for having very few people voting. If the case was that they did not like either of the candidates then they should've used their voice to do something about it before election day, there is no excuse. There was a reason why Emerson said the youth is powerful, sadly more than half of the youth did not use their power.
In all honesty I feel like Emerson wouldn't do anything about this, not because he can't but because he would want the youth to do it themselves. To go after what they want, if they want a change they need to go fight for it. Emerson's whole point was to be yourself, if you believe in something then who gives a shit about what anyone else thinks you do you. This quote "It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude" says you act how the world expects you to, alone you act yourself and the whole point is to be yourself in this world. Emerson probably thought this might've been the issue, the youth acted how the world wanted them too.
After the election there was so much hatred and anger, which I'm sure many have been aware of because most of it has been through social media. A person posted a picture of their ballot and this person voted for Donald Trump, and after Trump won he said something in between the lines of "it was a joke I honestly thought he would loose". In that moment I was very angry not at who he voted for but the fact he took the election as a joke, what a disillusion honestly. Now, how would Emerson react to this? Perhaps the same way many reacted, angry, disappointed, disillusioned. This actually might've frustrated some people because they that had the privilege to vote took it as a joke, while someone who doesn't have that privilege wished they did.
The whole purpose of Self-Reliance was to be the person you're mean to be. Not the person they want you to become but the one that's for you. Be true to yourself, everyone has their opinions and that's okay but that doesn't mean you have to do as they say. As I've said before who gives a crap about what anyone has to say if others don't believe in what you do that's great because as Emerson said "To be great is to be misunderstood", so you must be doing something right. Not everyone will understand you and I feel like that's part of being yourself.

Socratic Seminar

I was absent on the first day of the seminar which I heard was good. The second day of the seminar was really quite. Andrew offered to help and give me a quote so he gave me one but someone said it so I had to look for a different one. I don't know I feel like it could've been better.

Emerson Quotes

"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." What I understood from this quote was that society tells you to follow what they do because if you do otherwise you're not doing it right so if you don't follow other and what they do you accomplished being yourself and what you want to do.

"Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." This means to not go where everyone goes because its what they expect but instead to make a difference and be someone can look up to.

"Nothing can bring you peace but yourself." What Emerson meant by this was that don't look for the answers in others but in yourself because that's where its at.

Self Reliance Question

What encouraged him to write this essay?

Mind Map

The mind map was very useful in my opinion. We added words that we didn't know the definition to, quotes, essays, etc. Also we tried organizing it as  much as we could.

Letter to Mentor

My big question that I would ask everyone is why is it easy for people to lie rather than to be honest? I didn't really choose one certain person because at one point everyone has lied so it only makes sense to ask everyone. I've noticed this since I was a child but I was always curious to find out why. The thought of even lying is insane to me but when it comes to telling the truth people find it challenging. Even joking around, any type of lie, we have all lied. The lying part isn't even as important I want to know why its hard to say the truth and easy to lie when it should actually be the other way around. I have a feeling you guys as my mentors can help me come to a conclusion to my big question.

Brag Sheet

I have done community service with the school, we have helped the ederly and it was surprisingly a fun experience. I almost got awards for every single year in elementary, I have 6 in total. I got 2 awards in jr high. And I think that's about it.

Literature Analysis Questions 1

1. The novel I read I was Catcher in the Rye,   by J. D. Salinger. It's about a 16 year old named Holden Claufield, he talks about his life and how eneded up where he is. He starts by talking about moving from school to school because of his grades. Holden isn't specific about where he's at but I believe he's at s resting home while telling the story. He just has this really inteeredting journey of life and the decisions he makes, makes him loose people he loves.

2. The theme that I got from this book was learning to grow up and dealing with death. As Holden talks about Allie (his brother that died) he breaks down everytime. He realizes it never gets easier, he just got better and comfortable talking about it. While he also starts discovering the world snd growing up. He slowly but surely talks about his sexual experiences. He learns about how feelings work.

3. From the tone of the story I think I know the authors morning routine or I can probably guess it. He would get up in the morning, have coffee and a normal basic breakfast. The usual eggs, sausage, pancakes, hash browns, etc. He's probably one of those people who when they wake up in the middle of the night they don't bother to try to sleep again instead they do something to kill time.

My Aeries

The grade I got on my essay was an A-. The first thing that came into my mind was happiness. It was definitely worth the reading and going through words I didn't undertand. I don't know if I agree with my grade I would give it a B+  because I know I could've done better. For my vocab tests I have a decent grade in that, and I keep up with my journals. I'm satisfied with my grade and the way Mr. Preston grades us.

Young Goodman Brown Questions

1. I think Hawthorne's purpose for writing this story was to show us that we should expect the unexpected. Honestly Hawthorne had many purposes for writing this story he made many good points in this story. Throughout the entire story he was very clever and just made the story more interesting maybe he did that to keep us reading or maybe not.
2. Young Goodman Brown's wife who is named Faith is actually a great name for her. The name Faith fits her because in the story she remained having hope no matter what the situation was. I think there were some point in which Brown had faith in her and didn't.
3. I think the ribbons signify the goodness. I think that the pink ribbons is what kept their relationship stable and good.
4. I think that Young Goodman Brown witnessed everything but in a dream. In the story his mom comes back to life, also his dad they were all together at one point which is bizarre because like I said his parents came back to life. Although the story doesn't say that it was an awful nightmare I bkeieve it was.
5. The old man is the "devil", I believe this because in the story he came out of the forest when Young Goodman Brown was there. Also there were many signs showing that something evil/ bad was going to happen. You start noticing that ever since the old man showed up into Brown's life weird things just started happening.
6. I feel like the staff was part of the old man or like his accomplice. The staff was also a sign or symbol.
7. If Young Goodman Brown wouldn't have ventured the forest I think everything would be the way it was. He would still have Faith and his wife, maybe his townspeople. At the same time I feel like he still would've have gone to the forest because he wanted to reach his "destination". So maybe things would be different, maybe not.

Response to "Earth on Turtle's Back"

The story "Earth on Turtle's Back" was definitely interesting to read. What I understood after reading was that the earth was being created in that time and that the turtle or animals created earth. I absolutely loved that despite the fact that the muskrat was small he was even more determined to bring the earth up. So many things in that story that don't make sense but if you view it from a different perspective it does. The language they use in the story is similar to the one I use on a daily basis because we communicate by expressing  how we feel and the most obvious by speaking. It is extremely important to read word for word even when rereading. It's very important because it makes the story embellishing. The story might not even make sense but you think it does because of so much detail that was put into it.
